Childs Frick Abyssinia Expedition

Map showing the path of the Childs Frick expedition
In conjunction with the CMNH Section of Mammals, the GIS Lab has produced the Childs Frick African Expedition web map. Childs Frick (1883-1965), son of Pittsburgh industrialist Henry Clay Frick, led an expedition to Abyssinia and British East Africa in 1911-12 to collect mammals for Carnegie Museum of Natural History.  Accompanying Frick was renowned ornithologist Edgar Mearns (1856-1916), who collected birds for the Smithsonian Institution.  The group collected extensively through what is now Ethiopia and Kenya.  This map outlines the route taken by the two explorers, and highlights of the unique and interesting collections along the way.

Visit the project’s website with more information on the journey.
