{"id":460,"date":"2014-07-16T17:33:08","date_gmt":"2014-07-16T21:33:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/maps.carnegiemnh.org\/?page_id=460"},"modified":"2017-07-25T14:32:30","modified_gmt":"2017-07-25T18:32:30","slug":"historic-aerial-imagery","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/maps.carnegiemnh.org\/index.php\/projects\/historic-aerial-imagery\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic Aerial Imagery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-464 \" src=\"https:\/\/maps.carnegiemnh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/HistImagery.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maps.carnegiemnh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/HistImagery.png 215w, https:\/\/maps.carnegiemnh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/HistImagery-150x92.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><br \/>\nThrough popular mapping applications such as google maps and bing maps, aerial imagery\u00a0has become\u00a0an integral part\u00a0of how we view our world. \u00a0However, aerial imagery has been collected for more than 150 years! \u00a0The first aerial imagery was captured from a hot air baloon in 1858. \u00a0In southwestern Pennsylvania, the earliest available imagery was captured in June 1939.<\/p>\n<p>The GIS Lab at Powdermill Nature Reserve has collected, georeferenced, and mosaiced historic aerial imagery for the Ligonier Valley from 1939 to the present. \u00a0In addition to being an interesting reference, historic aerial imagery is a powerful tool for ecological research. \u00a0Scientists at Powdermill have utilized this collection of imagery to identify forest stands of various ages and land use histories to determine how human impact shapes forest composition. \u00a0These rasters are available upon request by <a title=\"About\" href=\"https:\/\/maps.carnegiemnh.org\/index.php\/about\/\">contacting the GIS Lab<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/carnegiemnh.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/StorytellingSwipe\/index.html?appid=658b76928bfe4b5f83e4db60b69464a6&amp;webmap=53eb09180ec54920b8a44d3aee5a827f\" target=\"_blank\">Seventy-five years of landscape change at Powdermill Nature Reserve<\/a> is a new app produced by the GIS Lab that offers a guided tour comparing\u00a01939 imagery to what can currently be found on the reserve.
